Leeds return to the second tier and start the season in devastating fashion. Despite going in at 0-0 after missing a sack full of first half chances, United score five in the second half. Russell Wainscoat opens the scoring from distance and Mitchell adds a second soon after. White and Jennings score with opportunist strikes before Ramage reduces the arrears for South Shields. White grabs his second and Leeds' fifth to cap a fine afternoon.

Leeds' good start continues as Forest are thrashed at Elland Road. Turnbull opens the scoring from a yard out before Tom Jennings, from distance, makes it two. The game is as good as won on 24 minutes when Wainscoat scores and Turnbull goes close a minute later. Mitchell adds a fourth with 11 minutes to go and Forest have the 'keeper to thank for keeping the score at 4-0.

Craig puts the hosts in fron with a shot that goes in off the underside of the bar. Leeds level a minute after the break when White scores a header after Jennings had flicked on a Mithell cross. The away side have plenty of chances in the second half but are made to settle for a point.
