Leeds' return to the top flight gets off to the worst possible start. Derby restrict Leeds to efforts from distance and take the lead when Bowers heads home a cross from Crooks. United's cause isn't helped after 48 minutes when Wills Edwards is forced to leave the field with a knee injury. The ten men battle gallantly but Duncan seals the points for the visitors.

Harry Roper gives Leeds the lead, on his debut, following a cross from Cochrane but Hampson levels after some fine play by Wilkinson. The game is settled when Jack Milburn trips Wilkinson and McLelland scores from the resulting penalty.

Both sides have to settle for a point in a game ruined by the strong wind. Cochrane's superb individual effort gives Leeds the advantage but Rovers level through Thompson's header from a corner.

Charlie Keetley's header gets Leeds off to a great start and Wilf Copping makes it two with a deflected free kick. Hampson pulls a goal back when he dribbles through the Leeds defence to score but United seal the win when Furness heads home Duggan's corner.
