The referee threatens to abandon the game after a missile is thrown at Gary Sprake. Order is restored before Eddie Gray puts Leeds in front with a superb header. The referee turns down a strong penalty appeal from Burnley when Andy Lochhead's effort appears to be handled inside the area and Paul Madeley goes close to adding a second. Leeds have to settle for a point when Harris levels a minute after the break. Seven Burnley fans are arrested following the disorder.

Giles misses a great chance to increase the lead just before half-time. Early in the second half, Gary Sprake leaves the field on a stretcher with Norman Hunter going in goal before the Leeds keeper returns, four minutes later, after treatment. Johnny Byrne's shot takes a wicked deflection off Geoff Hurst for the fourth and Hurst races through to make it 5-0. It's six when Martin Peters scores a fine solo goal and Hurst completes his hat-trick following good work by Brabrook and Byrne.
