Leeds come from behind twice but start the season with a defeat on Tyneside. Newcastle take a fortunate lead early on when Micky Burns manages to head home a wayward shot from Tommy Cassidy. Ray Hankin forces home an equaliser 12 minutes later but Jimmy Armfield's side find themselves behind again when Kennedy fires an unstoppable shot past Dave Stewart. Four minutes into the second half, Gordon McQueen's header is punched off the line by Kennedy and Peter Lorimer scores from the spot. However, the drama does not end there and Burns scores a dramatic late winner following a corner.

Due to "technical difficulties" the TV audience are denied highlights with the Match of the Day cameras unable to broadcast from Elland Road. The visitors strike first when Gordon Hill converts Lou Macari's cross but Leeds level through Ray Hankin. Alex Stepney prevents the hosts going in front when he saves well from Arthur Graham and Tony Currie.

Micky Burns scores two against Leeds, as he did on the opening day of the season. The away side lose David Barton who is stretchered off following a challenge by Joe Jordan but the defence holds firm. The closest Leeds come is through Trevor Cherry who hits the post and Gordon McQueen sees a header cleared off the line. The goals come five minutes before the end of each half. First Tommy Cassidy lays the ball off to Burns who beats Stewart from the edge of the box and he grabs a second when McQueen's headed clearance falls to him and he finishes with a first time shot.

WEDNESDAY 8th FEBRUARY 1978

Leeds are left with a mountain to climb in the second leg after Forest win 3-1 at Elland Road. Peter Withe volleys home after Tony Woodcock flicks on Martin O'Neill's cross and two minutes later Woodcock provides a cross and Withe gets his second. Leeds reduce the arrears through Eddie Gray's right foot shot but ex Leeds player John O'Hare seals the win after a neat one-two with Withe.

Peter Lorimer's poor record from the penalty spot continues as Leeds are beaten by the Hammers. Brian Flynn creates an opening for Arthur Graham to fire the Whites into the lead but 19 year old Alvin Martin heads an equaliser on the stroke of half time. That header is Martin's first goal for West Ham and he soon adds another in the second half. Leeds press and on 76 minutes, Billy Bonds flattens Tony Currie in the box but Lorimer fires the penalty well wide of the post.
