Tony Phlliskirk scores the only goal of the game as Leeds are beaten in the Yorkshire Derby. The Blades temporarily lose Brian Smith who requires stitches in a head wound before Peter Beagrie sees an effort ruled out for offside. Ian Snodin is denied by a superb tackle from Martin Pike but it's Philliskirk who strikes after Peter Withe's flick on.

John Sheridan lights up Elland Road with a stunning goal to set Leeds on their way to three points. Only nine minutes have passed when Ian Snodin taps a free kick to Sheridan, who flicks the ball up and volleys it into the top corner of the Derby goal. Phil Gee and Gary Micklewhite go close to an equaliser but Keith Edwards settles any Leeds nerves with a low shot with three minutes to go.

Leeds march into the Semi-Final with a victory at Wigan who miss a host of first half chances. Mervyn Day saves well from Ian Griffiths and Chris Thompson whilst Bobby Campbell squanders an oppportunity following a Paul Jewell knock-down and he also hits the post with a header. Leeds take the lead through John Stiles and then Micky Adams curls home a beauty from 20 yards for number two.

Reading, struggling at the wrong end of the table, put in their best performance of the season to beat Leeds at Elm Park. They take the lead in the opening minutes when Jack Ashurst, attempting to clear, helps the ball over the line after Bremner chests it towards goal. Trevor Senior then heads in from a corner with Leeds furious after believing Mervyn Day is fouled in the process. Leeds score a last minute consolation when Ian Baird creates the opening for John Pearson.
