Howard Wilkinson hands debuts to Jim Beglin, Mickey Thomas, John McClelland and John Hendrie but it's a Newcastle debutant, Micky Quinn, who steals the headlines with four goals. Quinn opens the scoring from the spot after a foul by Beglin but Leeds respond instantly through Bobby Davison and Ian Baird to go in 2-1 up at half time. Quinn completes his hat-trick in the second half and John Gallacher adds another as Leeds are well beaten in glorious sunshine.

The promotion favourites are up and running thanks to a bizarre own goal. Bobby Davison scores from a tight angle to give Leeds an early lead but Alan Comfort silences Elland Road with a stunning strike with 15 minutes left. With time running out, Vinnie Jones' through ball only finds 'Boro defender Gary Parkinson whose back pass hits a divet to deceive Kevin Poole and give Leeds three points.

Chris Fairclough's first Leeds goal earns a point against Blackburn at Elland Road. The visitors take the lead in the first half through Mark Atkins before Fairclough heads Leeds level following a Gordon Strachan corner. Just three minutes later, Terry Gennoe produces a world class save to deny Strachan.

Bobby Davison sends Leeds into round two with a first half winner against Blackburn. Gordon Strachan is outstanding on the night and the little Scot plays Davision through for the only goal. Blackburn improve after the interval and ex Leeds midfielder Scott Sellars is guilty of wasting ther best chances.

The Second Division's biggest crowd so far this season sees Leeds gain revenge for an opening day hammering at Newcastle. A tense game could have gone either way with Mervyn Day producing a superb save to deny Kevin Dillon before Ian Baird superbly heads the winner from a Mel Sterland cross. A fine way for David Batty to celebrate his 21st birthday.

Leeds thrash their nearest promotion rivals in the Easter Monday clash between the top two in the Second Division. Paul Stancliffe blocks Chris Kamara's shot but Gordon Strachan is on hand to score from the reound. Lee Chapman scores a second before Strachan makes it three from the spot and Gary Speed races through to round off the scoring and cap a fantastic afternoon.
