Highly rated Alan Fowler comes in for his first game this season and scores both goals as Leeds win the Yorkshire Derby. Rimmer hits the crossbar early on for Wednesday before having an effort ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper. The visitors take a deserved lead when Mark Hooper evades a challenge in the area and slots the ball home. Wednesday hit the bar again, through Starling, before Fowler levels from close range. Just before half time, Cochrane plays Duggan through, his shot hits the post but Fowler is on hand to knock in the rebound and give Leeds the lead. Ball had seen an effort ruled out for offside minutes before and the visitors felt hard done by. A third "goal" by the Owls, again from Rimmer, is chalked off by the referee and they return home wondering how they lost the game.

United take a fortunate lead at Roker Park when Keetley's shot, which is going wide, hits Fowler and deceives Thorpe. Jack Milburn's error gifts Carter an equaliser and Gurney lashes home a second to give the hosts the lead. Leeds have a lucky escape when Gallacher is fouled inside the box but Connor hits the post with his penalty. Harry Duggan levels but the Sunderland players surround the referee claiming handball and the effort is duly disallowed. Davis heads in a third before Charlie Keetley pulls one back when Shaw slips in the area, giving the Leeds forward a chance he can't miss. Sunderland seal the points when Carter scores his second to make it 4-2.
