Leeds give a debut to new signing Frank Fidler and he marks it with a goal. Bell gives the home side the lead when his effort from 20 yards curls away from Searson's reach and into the net. Harrison levels off the underside of the bar and Fidler gives Leeds the lead after poor marking in the Blackburn defence. Crossan heads a deserved equaliser but Ray Iggleden wins it with just six minutes left.

Leeds dominate the second half but find Streton in fine form in the Luton goal. Kirk suffers a blow to the mouth and after the game has two teeth removed.

Leeds' unbeaten run comes to an end at Highfield Road. Chisholm powers his way past two tackles and shoots beyond Searson to give Coventry the lead and then John Chales clears an effort from Allen off the line before Leeds score a quick-fire double. Williams scores a fine solo goal to level and then a minute later he lays on a goal for Kerfoot. Coventry quickly level through Chisholm's second and then the hosts take command. Lockhart sweeps in Dorman's free kick and then when Charles fouls Roberts, Lockhart puts away the penalty. There's still time for a Leeds penalty but Charles sees his effort saved by Taylor in the 89th minute.

The afternoon is marred by the death of Leeds supporter, John Sumner aged 71 who collapses in the stand and dies during the game.

Leeds are heavily beaten at Villa Park and exit the Cup. The tone is set after 16 minutes when Eric Kerfoot attempts to head the ball back to Searson but Bentley nips in to head it past the goalkeeper. Kirk is denied an immediate equaliser by a fine save from Robertson but Mills levels at the second attmpt after his initial shot is blocked by Bathgate. Bobby Smith takes advantage of a John Charles error to restore the lead, he heads his second, and Chelsea's third, at the far post and completes his hat-trick following a breakaway from a Leeds corner. The rout is complete when Gray's shot takes a wicked deflection and flies past Searson.
